hello! as some of you may know, i've been dealing with a lot of pain due to my wisdom tooth. i need to have it removed and of course, that involves quite a bit (both financially and technically). my parents will be able of helping me out a bit next month, but it's too expensive for us.

Great minds think alike because I was just thinking that we having checked in with Joan in a while so this problem is perfect.

Every Saturday for over a month now, Joan has watched the humans and Ozzy leave the house in the morning and come back hours later loud, smelly, and energized. She does not have a problem with this per se but if she had eyebrows, she’d raise one of them. She would raise the other when they’re all too tired to play with her for too long after they come back.

So, Joan makes a decision.

When the next Saturday rolls around and Steve is digging around in the drier for his jersey, she makes her case known. She whines. She meows. She gets in the way of every step. She commits a drive-by biting. She even gets in the storage closet in the hallway and knocks over the dreaded cat stroller so it falls into the hallway.

She makes it very clear. She wants to go.

Eddie coos at her, “Awe, baby, she feels left out. Let’s take her.”

“Ed, it’s hot outside,” Steve replies, gesturing to Joan. She rubs her head against his leg. “She’s gray.”

“Steve, don’t be racist.”

“I’m not being – how is that –“ Steve sputters and then rambles on about tiny bodies, and fur, and overheating in the sun, but Joan already knows she got her way. Steve can’t say no to Eddie and he can’t say no to her either. Plus, she always gets her way.

Her way is the right way.

Steve sighs and gives in, “But if she gets too hot, you have to take her home.”

As a reward for Steve and Eddie’s good decision-making, Joan helps them get ready to leave. She wiggles her way into the cabinet with the first-aid kit and pulls out bandaids. She leaves them inside Steve’s cleats. He says thank you when he finds them.

Ozzy huffs from where he’s laying in his dog bed.

Joan purrs when Steve pets her head.

Since Eddie disappeared down into his studio the moment Steve agreed to let her come, Joan continues ‘helping Steve.’ Mainly, she cleans up (eats) all the scraps of lunchmeat he drops when making sandwiches for him, Eddie, Robin, and Nancy.

Eddie immerges from the studio ten minutes before they’re supposed to leave with a hastily sewed shirt made for a cat. It’s made out of the soft material of the cheer squad t-shirts he made for the other team members’ partners. He presents it first to Steve and then holds it out to Joan like, “Ta-dah.”

Joan sniffs the fabric – it smells like Eddie – and Steve is just like, “Why did you make that?”

“Because Joan’s got to represent, Stevie. We’re a jock family now and jocks wear their team colors,” Eddie insists, grin getting bigger when Steve rolls his eyes at him. “Everybody else is wearing team colors. Even Ozzy. See.”

He gestures to the pin attached to his yellow service dog vest that says ‘#1 Steve Harrington Defender.’ It’s right next to a patch that says ‘If You Pet Me, You Are A Part Of The Problem’ which is… “That’s new.”

“Yeah, I’m solving all the world’s problems today, baby,” He grins. “Isn’t that right, Joan?”

She hisses at the shirt.

i've been having. mithrun thoughts lately. can you imagine getting a dog with him? going on walks and making him food? taking care of him and slowly watching him get better? even if it's so so so so small. im dying.

✦ short and sweet, but i wanted to give you some mithrun hcs!!! this is the first time i’ve written for him, so it may be a little rough, haha! these ideas are SO precious…. it’s from your pov and all the lil things you do for him. <3

✦ Since he spends most of his day laying down or sleeping, you try to do your best to make sure he doesn’t feel completely alone. Whether that be by sitting beside him reading, or resting your head at the foot of the bed and napping yourself. You feel as if it’s the least you could do.

✦ You enjoy cutting his hair for him. Since he can’t do so himself during this point in his rehabilitation, you decide to take it upon yourself to do so. Even brushing it and making sure it doesn’t have any tangles, your ministrations are so tender and caring that he doesn’t feel any discomfort. It’s another thing you always offer to do for him when you spend time together.

✦ You’re successful in convincing him to get a service dog, and the two of you care for it together. You made the suggestion to him one day, and after letting him contemplate, you both decide it’d be a great decision for him. (Thinking about the fan comic of him with a service dog after Laios suggested it. You’d definitely have to help him come up with the name.)

✦ Cooking for him was something you did often. You were sure to make his favorites, always feeding it to him after. Even as he begins to heal, you can’t help but still insist on helping him eat. There was something about it that felt domestic, especially now that you feel as if you have a little family with your dog now.

✦ Imagine walking with him, enjoying the sunshine on your skin and the cool breeze in the air. Times like those were when you felt especially thankful he was still by your side. You’d even take your dog with you, the outings something that were really beneficial for him.

✦ Taking care of him was second nature for you. Helping him get clean, making sure he was comfortable, keeping track of how he was feeling. Like stated before, you even made sure he ate and did in fact sleep, as we know how he is with making sure his own needs were met.

✦ Little changes in his rehabilitation were always celebrated. He would slowly get better over time, but big changes or accomplishments that occasionally happened never got past you. You’ll take the win no matter how small, as long as you’re there by his side. <3

Update: (it's been a while)

All this time picked up some debt so we're still on it but good part is we started working so we might be out of it soon.

Bad part of it we probably still need both incomes.

for any of the writers here, there’s a new site that i use for my writing. they have pretty strong stances on ai and say they’ll never weave generative ai into their site and they believe that ai generated content should not overtake human voices

you can connect your ao3 to it and it’ll have a drop down menu with all your existing works, so you can directly add a chapter or make a new work. it copies the html and takes you straight to ao3. it has many other handy features regarding the actual writing portion, formatting, spell check, find and replace, etc

Time period post: Cops and postal services

Had this mentioned to me a little while back on police and ambulance services a little while back and it blew my mind. I think it’s pretty important and cool to know and would really help in fic writing or at least knowing the world more. Including some stuff about the mail too as I think it’d be helpful.

I know I make all these posts but there’s stuff for me to learn too lol.

No national number, yet-

It wasn’t until 1968 that 911 was established and it took a long time to be fully implimented across the country, some rural parts just getting the service in the late 1990s! What did people do before then?

You would call the local department, same goes for things like the fire department or an ambulance or other such services. Usually these numbers would be stuck on a fridge or in the phone book or widely known, it was just longer and more localized. Or you die ‘O’ for operator and ask for the local police station/hospital etc you’re trying to reach like you would a number— similarly calling the operator you could give a name and address and they’d patch you through. However, by this time memorizing numbers was more of a thing- Operators existed still but they feel so 20s-40s to me.

The idea of 911 is it’s a quick number to memorize and put into the phone, especially in an emergency or incapacitated/worked up so you can’t request the station or explain too much. It is sort of a national thing but it is also state and local as you don’t have “US police” answering a call in the middle of nowhere you have the local department.

according to research 911 service did not come to central Oklahoma until a vote in 1987 and then several more up until 2009! This is Oklahoma City and its metro areas. Idk if Tulsa applies here as it’s up and over but needless… wouldn’t have it for a long time. (It is now officially managed as of 2016 Jesus Christ Oklahoma.)

Another note is that it would be incredibly rare for those on the East/North side of town to call the cops, it’s mentioned in the book/movie but communities like this tend to solve their own problems. Either working it out on own, own sense of justice or just to keep the greater trouble cops would bring out. I have a meta on this.

Highway patrol-

Bringing them up as it seems fitting lol, considering the speeding charges, the racing charges, the car modification changes etc the gang would be getting. Also because personally I’m curious on the distinction besides being a pain to drivers.

Traffic laws, speed traps and hiding in the bushes basically. Their jurisdiction is the highways instead of a typical beat.

US postal service-

Mail is on the rise, not only is there more people but it’s also when things really get centralized so there’s more to send and easier. Stuff like bills and receipts and catalogs were the real bulk of mail, alongside personal messages. There was a real effort to make things national and easier. As here’s a diagram from 1968 showing how complicated it is;

Delivery zones-

When mail was simplified during WW2 when regular folks stepped in, easier to remember for major cities and areas. It’s a precursor to more exact area and zip codes. Made mail come far quicker as it was easier to sort!

Zip codes-

More recent than you think, just like 911 you never really think any differently when you’re born with them available but they’re pretty new! And there was a bunch of adds in the paper to encourage public use typically featuring a cute little character.

Some adds like this one would even inform you what your zip code would be and what the purpose is!

Mailing-

Twice a day service, depending on area and time. The sheer volume of it! By the 60s twice a day delivery began to wind down but you could still send perishables and other goods with a high expectation of arriving alright. Since long distance calls were expensive for most of their existence, especially back then letters and post cards etc were preferred.

In fact people sent so many letters there was ‘Pen-pals’ , to those unfamiliar it’s when you send letters back and forth between someone met through a personal add, a club or service etc — it’s sort of like the analog version of a online friend in a way?

Talked about it in my magazine post but “mail in” was a popular way to get free or special offered items in magazines. Usually it was an add offer, something branded you could request like a Orange juice brand beach towel or something like that (ran well into at least the 80s) — you could also do this with some cigarette or other companies with points programs (like green stamps but for merch)

Contests, you enter through the mail, sign up/renew through the mail (slips are still in magazines today), submitting answers or stories etc — all mail or sometimes over the phone!

There was also catalogues, you either wrote them or arranged what you were purchasing over the phone.

What a great time to be a mailbox…

i know i said i was happy about how mel's story went, but the more i think about it the less i'm sure about that. this is very much connected to how the themes of classism and wealth disappeared in s2, but mel in the beginning was the epitome of piltover. she wanted to advance piltover to prove herself to her mother. to "put piltover—" and by extension herself, "���on the map."

she wanted wealth just to have it. and i'm not blaming her for anything that happened, especially with hextech! she, just like jayce and viktor, could not have known what it would lead to. i mean yeah heimerdinger said so but who the hell listens to heimerdinger? but anyway i think mel changed throughout s1, much in thanks to jayce. by the end she's become more cognisant of the mistreatment of zaunites. she's the first to vote for their peace. she was a good person all along but now she knows how to act on it. it's also seen more in s2 act 1. when she covers her painting with gold, it's symbolic—she won't act according to what her mother might think. she won't let her desire for approval dictate her anymore.

so somehow i wish those themes were. continued, somehow? like again they were dropped not just with mel but the whole show and it makes her story a off to me. there's no meaningful commentary on war or classism or how her ideology stands opposite to her mother's. like some people have said, it feels like she doesn't have much agency, even if she is really cool. and that to me is a shame because agency felt like her thing. "to shape your own destiny" as she says to jayce in s1. i know her collaborating with the black rose (but not fully joining them) and learning magic is supposed to represent becoming independent from her mother, taking her own path, but some other aspects of her character were thrown away... the more i think about it the more i'm thinking they kind of #girlboss-ed her a little bit. maybe to sell another champion. i can't help but feel like even though i enjoyed seeing her on screen, the payoff didn't feel proportionally satisfying compared to her setup in s1.

I know and understand where the whole "customer is always wrong" and Karen mentality comes from, but I'm also convinced there's Customer Service Agents out there who believe their totally unjustified anger and bad attitude towards a totally passive customer who hasn't done anything wrong and is just trying to get some paperwork done or buy a thing are a Righteous Sword cleaving through social injustices towards poor little misunderstood workers.

yes!!! eating is one of life’s biggest joys! always love talking and learning about food and watching people cook and eat and express their happiness, so this was a fun one to answer.

thomas a. billington: thomas needs something to chew or suckle on in the break room. think of any candy that your grandma would store on her detailed glass bowl. tootsie rolls, werther’s hard caramel candy, jolly ranchers… you get it. he doesn’t have any particulars when it comes to filling dishes and most of his diet consist of snacks and candies hence his thinner and shorter build.

edward pettigrew: he loves a good hot black tea with a side of rich tea biscuits or scones. he’s the guy who knows too much about tea. stomach ache? ginger tea. sleep aid? chamomile’s the way. for the more filling dishes, edward prefers light savory dishes with feta cheese involved. he’s really fond of fërgesë from his home country, but there’s no place on sodor that could make a mean one, so he settles with making it at his own home.

henry stanier: sliced apples! when he’s in a good mood, he’d shape them into little bunnies. he likes anything savory with a strong taste too, like his mother’s curry. henry loves a full course, hearty meal that tastes and feels good, and growing up, he’s always had a large appetite (fast metabolism). henry doesn’t like anything greasy or deep fried because it’ll make his stomach acid flare up. I had to look up what apple charlottes is, and yeah, I can tell you that henry would love it.

gordon j. gresley: gordon has a sweet tooth but he’s self conscious about it and has an image to uphold so he’ll tell anyone who’s making him coffee to make it black (he adds a packet of cream and sugar when nobody’s seeing) without anything added (his friends see right through him). his favorite dessert is orange float with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. gordon also likes food that is usually eaten together with friends or family (something something lazy susan) like pork roast or kway teow or thick beef stew with mashed potatoes. big portions are necessary!

james a. hughes: sweet margarita is james’ favorite drink to have during outings with his friends. he also loves a good french onion soup, especially paired with croutons (do not make them too hard or he’ll riot!!). speaking of croutons, james loves fondue and he always fights over it with thomas. really, any food that looks good and makes him look well-off would be on his favorites list (please, james, why does most of these dishes involve alcohol in one way or another). he also likes sweet danish pastries.

percival “percy” avonside: he’s a simple man when it comes to food he likes. sandwiches are the way to go! carbohydrates, proteins, the tasty stuff — it’s all there! eggs benedict (he puts another english muffin on top so the sauce won't spill everywhere) is his most favorite since it makes him feel special and fancy. percy also loves good coffee, usually mixed with condensed milk or mocha, since he delivers the night mail train.

tobias “toby” holden: tiramisu is his favorite dessert and he prefers it made with more coffee content. he has helped out henrietta many times with making it to the point he’s has the process memorized. for savory dishes, he loves some good lasagna with extra beef content in the sauce. it’s gotta drench. really, toby loves his layered food huh

montague “duck” collett: he’s not picky when it comes to food given to him, so he just eats what any average joe would eat (eggs on toast for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, sausage with potatoes and peas for dinner). normal person food. duck makes sure he has his meal three times a day and follows the motto; “eat before you’re hungry, stop before you’re full.” also diesel made mango panna cotta once for him as a desperate token of apology and duck fell in love with it.

donald and douglas dunalastair: like thomas, they don’t really have much preference for filling meals. dessert, though? now that’s the stuff. donald loves cranachan so SO much he wishes he could eat it every day. douglas likes candies more instead of softer, silkier desserts, like black licorice or peppermint candy. they also eat only twice a day since they get full super quickly. amazing how so much strength for shoveling snow is stored behind their lanky bodies. they also drink irn bru

oliver t. swindon: oliver loves shepherd's pie because it’s practical. everything he needs is right there, fitting for someone who doesn’t like complicated things. as for the sweet stuff… even after forgetting some of his memories after his rescue, oliver remembers the feeling and taste of halo-halo on his tongue clearly, something he missed dearly.

giovanni vin diesel: diesel loves bruschetta. he puts some pepper flakes on top for that spice kick. he also loves sfincione, specifically the way his family would make it, but, like edward, nobody on sodor knows how to cook a decent one (too much sauce, too thick of a bread, or too soggy) which makes him a bit sad. diesel’s kind of picky when it comes to the meals he can consider “favorite” because he believes he’s the most qualified in the culinary field on sodor due to his upbringing.

mavis hawthorne: a slice of blackforest cake always makes her heart sing. not too heavy on the whipped cream, though, because she doesn’t like her desserts too sweet. she also likes baumkuchen. whenever toby cooks lasagna, he’d make another portion to give to mavis, which quickly became her favorite and something she looks forward to during lunch breaks.

rebecca nassif: rebecca likes snacking a lot. she finds joy in eating! she grew up surrounded by meals. like diesel, because of her upbringing, she’s always been an enthusiast of not only food, but culinary arts as a whole. she loves cold desserts that usually remind her of her old neighborhood like this pistachio kulfi that she would made when she was younger. rebecca also missed having knafeh and mafruka since moving to sodor (it’s been like... a week.)

nia e. wanjala: whenever nia feels like treating herself to something good, she’d make her own version of the gatsby sandwich at her house. she’s especially keen on the french fries and enjoys extra hot sauce with it. it’d take two meal times for her to finish it all. lately, nia’s also been enjoying pastries like chocolate muffins and bombolone (chocolate fillings are her favorite).

lady: as part of her mission to understand humanity and their intrapersonal relationships, lady developed an affinity to eating. she’d eat anything as long as it’s acceptable by human standards even though she doesn’t have to. lady wants to understand that people eat not only to survive but as a way to show their love and culture. isn’t the greatest blessing to be bestowed upon living things the ability to consume to their heart’s content? does her lack of mortal needs indicate her lack of personal desire? anyways her favorite foods are fish and chips with sweet mayonnaise on the side and soft serve vanilla ice cream.

diesel 10: his go-to is black coffee mixed with red bull (added with some other weird concoction if he feels like it). some scrambled eggs with a dash of hot sauce for breakfast. some fried bacon if he has some self respect for the day. some dried sardines if he wants to feel miserable. some baklava with extra syrup and pistachio if he wants to treat himself because the sound of the crunch eases his stress
